Science of Addiction

Justin Jackson will begin the evening at 6pm with a presentation titled, “The Science of Addiction.” Justin is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner, National Certified Counselor, and is certified in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy at Master Center. Justin has provided therapeutic services to multiple treatment populations across a variety of settings in his career. He has worked with adolescents and families focusing on family dynamics and substance abuse, with college-aged students to address high-risk drinking, and with children in urban communities who suffer from disruptive disorders. Over the past 5 years, he has assisted adults suffering from addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders within the field of Medication-Assisted Treatment. Throughout his work, Justin implements evidenced-based practice and techniques, to include Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and DBT, to assist those in the healing process. He also applies mindfulness and meditation exercises in treatment. Justin’s experience in mental health and addiction treatment across populations has reinforced his belief that effective behavioral change comes from within.

Breaking the Cycle of Codependency

Following Justin’s presentation, “Breaking the Cycle of Codependency” will be delivered by Ian Jackson, LPC-MHSP, NCC. Ian is the Program Director for Recovery Unplugged which is located in Northern Virginia, South Florida, Nashville and Austin TX. Ian began his journey of helping others in 2007 during his undergraduate internship in Newburgh, NY working with at-risk use in the local area and helping with behavior modification. Ian received a double major in Psychology and Sociology with a minor in criminology from Mount Saint Mary College in 2010. Ian then moved to the Fort Lauderdale area in the same year to complete his Master’s degree in Mental Health counseling. It was at this time that he knew his passion would be substance use disorders and addiction. Addiction ran in his family which had already built the foundation for this passion. Ian has been working with clients in the field of addiction since 2011. Ian has worked with various populations including severe mental health, sports psychology, trauma, life coaching, addictions, anxiety, depression and personality disorders. Ian attributes his skills to a person-centered approach in which building rapport with the client is the upmost importance in the therapeutic relationship. Ian believes in giving back to the community through his work of giving speeches on bullying at schools as well as his involvement with the Boys and Girls clubs in South Florida. Ian has worked with Recovery Unplugged since 2015.
