Alcohol abuse affects more Americans than all other forms of drug abuse combined.  And despite its status in our society – legal, accepted, available everywhere – alcohol use is the third leading cause of preventable death in the USA (88,000 deaths due to alcohol every year).  How can this be?  Because one out of every ten Americans is predisposed to a disease called Addiction or, in this case, Alcoholism, and no one ever sees it coming.  For that unfortunate 10%, cutting down is almost impossible and quitting outright can be extremely dangerous – even life threatening.  Where does a person look for help?

It can be difficult to find treatment for an alcohol problem, not to mention the cost, disruption and the stigma that comes with needing help.  The Master Center was designed and launched to solve this problem from urgent Detox assistance to long-term, sobriety sustaining treatment.

We are committed to your recovery, both during your time as our patient and long after you are discharged from our care.

The Importance of Safe Alcohol Detox

Addiction in general is serious and highly debilitating. It is not a fight you should face alone, the good news is that you don’t have to.  The first step is sobriety.

Surprisingly, getting sober from alcohol might be the most dangerous Detox of all – it can easily land you in the hospital after a ride in an ambulance.  Mild to moderate alcohol withdrawal can include tremors, anxiety, insomnia, severe nausea with vomiting.  Serious withdrawal can lead to dangerously rapid heart beat, seizures, hallucinations and a life threatening condition called ‘Delirium Tremens’ that requires a medically induced coma to counteract.  Anyone who drinks on something close to a daily basis should seek medical assistance before attempting to stop.

Our treatment program in Richmond, VA, combines the medical expertise to make the process safe and effective and the experience and compassion to make sure it is as comfortable and dignified as possible.   We take great care with every case and understand that no two patients are the same.  Our programs are tailored to the individual. We work with you to build your personal treatment plan from the ground up on a one-to-one basis.

Our effective detox therapy plan will minimize harmful withdrawal symptoms. We offer continuous re-evaluations to monitor patient progress and ensure that the treatment is effective.

Stages of Alcohol Withdrawal

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can begin as soon as 8 hours from the last drink. They often reach the peak of their severity between 24-72 hours, while their full duration could last for weeks at a time.

Though symptoms can vary, the most common to occur during detox include:

  • Excess sweating
  • Uncontrollable shaking
  • Heightened anxiety and stress
  • Severe mood swings
  • Insomnia and restlessness
  • Nausea and vomiting

Experiences vary, patient to patient, and the longer a person has been drinking heavily affects the severity of withdrawal symptoms.  We are expert in gauging each patient’s need and tailoring their treatment regimen to match those needs without overdoing it.

The order in which you experience these symptoms may also vary. According to the American Family Physician, various symptoms are most likely to occur in three distinct procedural stages. Depending on the severity of alcohol addiction present, you may endure all of them at various points in your detox.

Stage 1

  • Tremors
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Anxiety

Stage 2

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Confusion
  • Tachycardia
  • Sweating
  • Temperature fluctuations

Stage 3

  • Severe disorientation
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures

In especially severe circumstances, a patient may develop a condition known as delirium tremens (DT). Though rare, usually affecting only 3-5% of detox patients, it incurs severe hallucinations, seizures, and may even result in death. Fortunately, with the right treatment program in place, we can greatly minimize the likelihood of patients experiencing delirium tremens.

Medical Detox (Medically Managed Withdrawal)

At the Master Center in Richmond, Virginia, we provide some of the most advanced addiction treatment plans and care available. We offer a full, comprehensive approach that aims to help patients manage their symptoms and prevent relapse in the future.

Our treatment plans are highly personalized and based on individual patient background and need.  We first stabilize the patient medically using a carefully chosen medication, like diazepam (Valium) or chlordiazepoxide (Librium).  These medications suppress and control withdrawal symptoms and ensure that the patient can sleep comfortably and by suppressing nausea and vomiting, maintain good nutrition and hydration.  As the initial sedative medication is tapered (usually over the course of 7 days) we introduce secondary medications as appropriate to further soften the detoxification process and to promote ongoing sobriety.  As soon as the patient is feeling well enough, we initiate a unique plan of coordinated, multidisciplinary treatment based on individual characteristics, past experience and need.
